5 Components of Physical Fitness
This week we started learning out Physical Fitness and what it means to be physically fit. I want all students at BME to get plenty of exercise each and every day but I also realize that teaching the why and how to be physically fit is even more important.
When I first graduated college I thought my job as a physical educator was to teach them sports skills and make sure they go hard for the 45 minutes I have them each week with little to no break.
Over time I have come to grow as a professional and realize that the education they get while in PE, is just as important. I would even go as far to say that it is more important! I tell our students all the time 'Mrs. Davis doesn't want you to exercise just this year...I want you to exercise for the rest of your life!' Man that is POWERFUL! As a Physival educator I want my students to love physical activity and to have the tools and knowledge as to why they should be physically active.
So..this week we began with Aerobic Capacity. We learned that it's our heart and lungs working together. Students participated in the PACER test from Fitness Gram. It was tied into their science curriculum by concentrating on what 'system' they are in. We hope that they will make the connections in a few months. Next week we are onto Muscular Strength and muscular Endurance.
Here is to months ahead of our students at BME wanting to be physically fit and leaning how that happens.

QR Codes oh my!
Through twitter I learned how to use QR codes in my classes. I have been busy making google forms and you tube videos to use with the QR codes. It has been so much fun! As a physical educator in NC we now have to gather concrete data to show growth with our students. Next week we will be using them. We will spend time teaching our 3-5 students how to use them.
Mr. C and I will be using QR codes through out the school year to gather data on what the students knew before we taught as well as after the unit. Here are some pictures from the process.
It's been a blast. Check back next week to see pictures from how it is going? Exciting times ahead in BME PE. Don't forget to follow us on twitter: @BMEbears, @BMEPhysEd.

The first day...
Well today was a GREAT day! And by great I mean wonderful, inspiring, exciting and uplifting. The first day of school always reminds me as to why I love my job!
Here are the top 10 reasons I love teaching Physical Education:
10-I get to learn and grow professionally all the time.
9-I love to see children smile when they walk into my gym.
8-I love to see kids sweat! (Yes, kids sweat in my gym)
7-I love to see a child be successful at a skill they once were unable to do.
6-I love wearing tennis shoes every single day.
5- I get to play and have fun every single day!
4- I can dance anytime I want to!
3-I can make a world connection from what I teach to something out in 'real life'
2-I feel like I was born to teach PE, other than being a wife and mother it's what I was put on this earth to do.
1-I love children.
So what's your top ten reasons you do what you do for a living? Sit down and take a moment to discern what they are.
What a great day and what a great way to start off a new year.

Do you tweet, twit or Have you Tweeted?
Tomorrow I have been asked to present to my fellow county Physical Educators on the National PE Institute and how to use Twitter. I am beyond excited to start this journey with everyone in the county. Just for clarification you can find the following accounts on twitter and follow me/BME/BME PE/ CC PE teachers:

Earlier this week I also got to introduce BME Staff to twitter. I ran out of the buttons I made very quickly. Everyone was very excited and supportive. My next goal is to make Twitter posters using QR Codes. I think I have fallen in love with QR codes! WOW! They are super easy and can do really cool stuff.
Our gym is shaping up nicely. I was busy today, hot gluing our word wall and pedometer posters. We are also going to have a "SHOE TROPHY." I got this idea from none other than.... Twitter! Each class with have a poster and each time the entire class wears their tennis shoes they will get a sticker. The class with the most stickers at the end of the month will get the SHOE TROPHY! How exciting. We will start PE the first day of school so be ready with those tennis shoes! Mr. C. and I have been busy planning the year and we are looking forward to your return. We will see you Thursday for the Meet and Greet and then bright and early Monday morning!

Day Two- an exclamation point
This morning started off with an early start...we met today to get our titter assignments for the day. If you want to connect on twitter or Instagram find me as fizzed2000
So today everyone was encouraged to join in on a early walk through UNC-Asheville campus and hiking trails. Here are some pics! It was fabulous and a little bit of a mile workout. We even got a free ECKO pedometer !! Way cool!
Our first keynote speaker is the highlight of the Institute for me! Joey Feith was so inspirational and on target with physical education. He did a presentation that just blew everyone away. I love technology and ways to connect with others using Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. There was a group that met last night and did small talks of using it specifically in our settings. He had great suggestions.
The first breakout session was focused on nutrition instruction and holding kids accountable for their learning. Andy showed ways to break groups up and ask short questions while rewarding the students that got the answers correct. LOVED !!
During lunch I ventured out to a place that I hold dear to my heart. I spent many weeks during middle and high school attending Blue Ridge Leaders School. I rarely get to this area of the state and I make sure to always go by. It was much more emotional for me this time.i know with out a shadow of a doubt that I ended up in this career because of my weeks at BRLS. When I left I was a blubbering mess! Ha! I didn't not spend more than an hour but loved every minute. In the comments below let me know if you have a place like that.
Here are some pictures... Isn't it just beautiful.
While at the BRLS I missed lunch and my duty for the twitter desk! YIKES! Thankfully I have great friends and fellow fellows and Chris Walker saved me! Thanks friend! Chris has been a great PE friend and we we're NC SPARK trainers a couple of years ago. He rocks...and hugs a lot!
Just a few minutes ago I met Shannon Miller and Olympic Gold medalist. She was so nice!
The final keynote of the day was by yet another Canadian. Guy spoke on Physical Literacy. His emphasis was on whether or not we are really preparing students for a lifetime of wellness. Are they able to create their own fitness plans and evaluate their health. He really hit a home run.
Following the end of the keynotes and breakout session the day ended up with a social a local brewery hosted by US Games. It was a blast! SO MUCH FUN! I cut a rug a time or two. I learned a couple of dances as well. Really a great night.
After the social I joined fellow fellows at the chocolate lounge. We enjoyed dessert and walking downtown Asheville. I'm looking foward to wrapping it up tomorrow and heading back home to see my sweet family.
