The First of Many- The First Tee

This week our 5th grade students had the great honor of participating in The First Tee. On Thursday and Friday morning we loaded up the bus with excited 5th graders and headed over to Carolina Colours golf course. We were greeted by Coach George and the other fantastic coaches. These men give up their time to plant tiny seeds of enthusiasm for the sport of golf. They were not only knowledgable but extremely patient with our students. We were even more fortunate to have our newly adopted Navy squadron send a few of their men to help out as well.
Enjoy the pictures below.
Warm ups

Coach George explaining the different parts of the golf course.

Students practicing their putting skills. At this station the goal was to putt three times and get a ball in each of the three sections.

At this station our students got to use irons to practice their swing in full force. For majority of our students it was the first time ever really hitting a golf ball for long distance.

Thursday was a beautiful day! Our students Friday had a bitter cold day and majority of the stations had to be moved inside. We look forward to our next trip in the Spring.

A BIG BIG thank you to Carolina Coloours for allowing our students from Brinson to experience time at their briar idyl golf course. And thank you to all of the men who volunteered their time over the two days.

What a great team!

This week is not an easy week for PE. Our book fair was this week and it was in our gym. That meant that Mr.C and I were camping outside all week. Well, we made it through cold mornings and blustering wind. BUT what made it manageable was our 4th and 5th grade teams. I mean how many other teachers feel sorry enough for Ya to bring you this on a cold morning.
And when 4th grade found out they were being shown up by 5th grade they stepped up their game with my favs.
You gotta love some Michelle Owens and Corey Kick!!!
This week Mr. C had a few apts so I got to spend my Friday with these two! A great PE sub and her daughter who decided to come home early from college. Missy and Kiera always make my day entertaining!!

So we SURVIVED book fair week once again! Next week we have a short week and we are playing PE Games that ROCK!

Frisbee Golf- an adventure

This week has definitely been an adventure! Shew! It has been challenging for Mr. C and I to get our students working cooperatively while working independently at the same time!
Our 3-5 students have been working on frisbee skills this month. This week and next week students will keep their score with frisbee golf. I have taught this lesson for many years. However, I have only had one class and only 28 students max. Well, add two classes together and it is all a new ball game. We made it and we have the stress lines to prove it. What makes it all worth it is that students had a blast and LOVED it!

This week we worked on the front 9 holes and next week we will work on the back 9 holes. If your looking for Disc Golf courses in New Bern there is a relatively new one at Creekside Park and there is an oldie but goodie at Glenburnie park.

My Family

Well I know this blog is about our PE program at BME but I wanted to take a week and share a little about my family. Joe and I have been married for 11 years.  He and I have 3 little girls. Olivia and Addison both go to BME and are in 3rd and 2nd grade. One of my favorite things about my job is that I get to teach them at least once a week and sometimes twice a week. Wow! What a blessing! We have a little one still at home , Emily Grace and she is 3 and goes to preschool.
We as a family love nothing better than spending the day together out and about exploring Eastern NC. We also LOVE to travel and vacation. I mean most people enjoy vacationing with their family but we take it to a whole new level! Haha! We are HUGE Disney fans and feel blessed that our girls have gone several times. We have it down to a budget friendly trip so if you ever have any questions in how we do it just send me an email. I LOVE talking Disney secrets.
Here are a few pictures of my family.

Adapted PE

Meet Ms. Turner. She teaches one of our self contained classes and many of her students receive Adapted PE. She has been one of our biggest cheerleaders! She is always willing to share her knowledge of the IEP process. She has been an essential part of how the Adapted PE program is changing in Craven County.
bless her hear but her classroom is in our building and she puts up with slamming doors, screaming kids and loud music 75% of the day while still teaching her class. She rocks!!!

Frisbee...oh yeah!!

This week in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades we started two new units: Chasing and Fleeing and Flying Disc. The students have LOVED the beginning of our Frisbee unit. They were taught how to hold the frisbee, backhand throw and two handed catch. They were then given challenges to do with a partner. They had a blast. I believe their favorite was the 'backhand give and go.'

I love when students come 'prepared' for class. Jordan heard that we were outside! She said she wanted to be cool like Mrs. Davis. You gotta love it!

Thank you for all you do for our PE program

This is Mrs. Rust. She teaches 5th grade at BME and she ROCKS! She rocks for so many reasons! One she is just an awesome person and wonderful friend. Two she teaches passionately all day long. Thirdly she has been so supportive our PE program. I can email Mrs. Rust a quick integration question and she always emails me back with great insight and information. Any new program that we do in PE she is all for. She called me one of her 'peeps' one day and made my week! From recruiting Gym rats to being supportive of our First Tee program she loves for our kids to be physically fit and she encourages them to do just that! Thank you Mrs. Rust for having our backs in PE.

Each week I'll be highlighting a teacher at BME who supports our PE program so check back soon!
